Wind Quintet #2 (2010) in three movements
Dur: 17:34
This work was begun in 2008, and with much of the first movement written or sketched, the project had to be abandoned to meet the obligations of other requested pieces with specific deadlines. It was finally completed during a sabbatical from my teaching post in Fall 2010.
I have played in wind quintets all my life and career, and I know the medium well, so it is a joy for me to write for this combination. The most challenging movement in this work may be the last, which is based on a six-measure ground bass and rhythmic pattern with changing meters.
The quintet is intended to be a serious addition to any program. As with much of my music, the language is quite chromatic, but the traditional use of lines, lyricism and counterpoint makes the work accessible to a wide audience.
