Morning Music (2010) for oboe, clarinet and bassoon
Dur: 6:30
I was approached in the spring of 2008 by clarinetist Tom Labadorf to write a new work for Trio d’Anches for a concert which would occur in early 2009. I began to work on a piece in a somewhat angular, chromatic style. Shortly thereafter, he came to me a second time and said they had been asked to appear on a local television program, in just about three weeks time, and would like to play something of mine on this occasion. My first thought was to finish the first movement of the longer piece, but then questioned whether it would fit the audience or morning TV watchers in the greater Hartford area!
I began to sketch a lighter piece, sort of in the still of Milhaud, Copland, et al. I liked it, but eventually left it and completed my first effort for this occasion. The longer piece was also finished in its entirety for the February concert and premiered, but I felt I wanted to also complete the little trifle. It became a self-standing work, which I called Morning Music. It makes a wonderful opener for either half of a recital for reed trio.
