Suite Hommage (1990) for wind quintet; in six movements modeled after the Baroque dance suite
Published by Bocal Music, through Trevco/VarnerMusic; Dur: 15:25
This was my first work for wind quintet, and my conception involved working within the parameters of the Baroque dance suite, with its order of movements and defined rhythmic and metrical characteristics, while at the same time using a more or less neo-classical pitch language. The piece has been thus described as a kind of double homage, tipping the hat at Bach and at Stravinsky, Ravel, and others at the same time. This is accurate, because I just let the music which resided in my ear and for which I had great affection guide me through the piece.
