Bagatelles for Clarinet and Bassoon (2008) in seven short movements

Dur: 9:30

I. Intrada
II. “In the Shadows”
III. Surfer Boys
IV. Canon I
V. Improviso (view page)
VI. “Game of Catch” Canon II
VII. Relay (view page)

The first movements written were Improviso and Relay. The genesis of this was a flurry of competitions for short pieces or no more than a minute in length. These two pieces were chosen to be included at the national meeting of the College Music Society, and also appeared on the radio broadcast of the 60X60 competition.

Some of the movements are very contrapuntal, especially involving various kinds of canon, while others, such as Improviso, allow the clarinet to float over a bassoon ostinato. They are rhythmically intriguing and have enjoyed performances in the US and Europe.

This work is available through Northeastern Publications, Roncorp division.
